About Us
Yuruma Journeys is a community-based ecotourism initiative managed by families from the Indigenous People of San José de Uchupiamonas, within Madidi National Park. It was born as a sustainable alternative that creates local jobs and actively contributes to preserving one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth. Our lodge sits along the shores of Santa Rosa Lake, the largest in Madidi, offering an authentic experience deep in the heart of the jungle, with a low environmental footprint and a deep social commitment.
WHAT DOES YURUMA MEAN?
“Yuruma” comes from the Tacana language and means the “scent” or “essence” of a local tree. It is also a sacred mountain range for the Uchupiamonas people, standing as a guardian of the territory. The name reflects the true spirit of our project: a deep connection between nature, culture, and spirituality.
OUR IDENTITY AND VALUES
Founded in 2018, Yuruma is operated directly by the community, backed by more than 20 years of experience in ecotourism. Our goal is to offer authentic adventures while protecting the land. Through tourism, we generate local employment, strengthen our ancestral culture, and help defend the rainforest against ongoing threats in the region.
ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP AND WASTE MANAGEMENT
We have established a responsible waste management system: composting for organic matter and transporting inorganic waste out of the area for proper disposal. These practices minimize our environmental impact and foster sustainable tourism within the protected area.
INFRASTRUCTURE AND ARCHITECTURE
Our infrastructure is handcrafted using local, natural materials, guided by principles that blend seamlessly into the environment. The design honors Uchupiamonas culture, emphasizing functionality, durability, and harmony with the living jungle.
